Dennis Robert Bergeman, age 75, of Port Clinton, passed away after a brief illness, on Friday, Feb. 17, at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky. He was born on Aug. 12, 1947, in Fremont, to Denver and Dorothy (Sours) Bergeman.

Denny graduated from Port Clinton High School and later attended and played football at Kemper Military School and Culver-Stockton College. He earned his master’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University. Denny would go on to teach and coach at various schools including Fremont St. Joe, the University of Cincinnati, and Norwalk City Schools, from which he would retire.

It is appropriate to use a football analogy to honor Denny, a long-time friend. He was an all-conference football player at Port Clinton, combining with Bob Nichols for one of the greatest linebacker tandems of all time.

Denny played football for Kemper Military Academy and then Culver Stockton College in Missouri. He was an assistant coach for the legendary Bob Smith at Fremont St. Joe and went on to serve as defensive coordinator for Norwalk’s State Championship team.
